I have been photographing couples for over 10 years now, but I was looking for a way to switch things up. My typical “go-to” locations for sessions were starting to leave me feeling a bit uninspired, and I was craving a way to photograph my couples in a new light so that my blog readers would feel they truly knew the story of the couple by the time they finished, and so that my couples really fell in love with their images.
And that is where the idea of sessions in clients’ homes was born. Here are five reasons why I think you will love them and why I think you should do one as well!
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve stared at my weather app on my phone, seeing the forecasted “chance” of inclement weather, and had to do the whole volley back and forth with a couple: “Do we reschedule?” “Do we wait it out?” Or that gut-wrenching feeling when I realize that there is a big event happening the SAME weekend, in the SAME location as the couple’s session. Ugh!
But when we are shooting in your home, these are things that we don’t ever have to flinch about. The only event that will be happening that day inside your weather-protected home is your portrait session.
What better place to document the love between you two lovebirds than in a location that truly defines you?! It’s decorated in your favorite colors. It has photos from your recent vacation and from when you first met. I can find your favorite pastimes within these walls such as that favorite book that’s been read cover to cover a few too many times. It also may be home to your favorite furbaby. It’s a place you have built together, and it’s truly the best setting to help elaborate on the visual story of you as a couple.
How good does it feel to come home after a long day of work, or when you’ve been away on vacation? Stepping foot back into your home has a way of putting you at ease and that’s why it’s the perfect spot to do your photos.
At-home sessions also tend to be a little more casual and informal, so it won’t seem like the big production that an on-location session can sometimes feel like. And because you will feel more relaxed, it will likely lead to us capturing a greater intimacy and organic connection between Y’all. This, in turn, will equate to amazingly authentic portraits.
Doing a session at your home will make it super easy for you. You don’t have to get in your car, travel somewhere, and then try to figure out where exactly you are meeting me at within this on-location spot. You just have to wait for me to arrive at your doorstep. How amazing is that?!
Plus, your wardrobe is also right there if you want to change it up. Also any “props” you may want to incorporate, it’s all right there for you. Again, it equates to less stress for you and gives me happier clients to photograph.
The best thing about these in-home sessions is the fact that they are unique. No other couple is going to be in the exact same home, doing the exact same things, with the exact same chemistry and connection. One couple I worked with has a coffee roasting company, so we showed them making a cup of joe together. Another had a husband in a band, so we showed him playing for her and teaching her the guitar. I feel like it allows my readers to get a better understanding of just who you are as a couple and really pulls them into their story.
